KALGOORLIE OFF TRAIN EXCUSIONS
Kalgoorlie is a historic mining town in Western Australia that was established in 1893 during the Western Australian gold rushes. It soon replaced Coolgardie as the largest settlement on the Eastern Goldfields. The area around Kalgoorlie was originally inhabited by the Wongatha people. Gold was discovered in Kalgoorlie in 1893, sparking a gold rush that transformed the region. Today, Kalgoorlie is home to many historic buildings and attractions that provide an insight into its rich history. The city is also known for its mining industry and is home to one of the largest open-cut gold mines in the world, the Super Pit. Take your choice of one of the following off train excursions. Your choice can be made on the train.
- Paddy Hannan's Ounce of Luck: Tales from the Golden Mile: A short play performed by local artists from the theatre company Stage Left highlighting the tales of The Golden Mile and the beginning of the thriving day of gold glory. Afterwards you can choose to climb up onto a monster dump truck before heading to the "Super Pit". Tour starts at 9pm and arrives back around 12am.
RAWLINNA OFF TRAIN EXPERIENCE
- This seasonal experience has you enjoy morning refreshments with the locals of the Rawlinna sheep station. Spanning 2.5 million acres, this outback station is some 5 hours drive from Kalgoorlie. Witness the dawn arising over the Nullarbor.
RAWLINNA OFF TRAIN EXPERIENCE
Hidden in the vast interior of South Australia lies a ghost town that once bustled with life. Today, the town of Cook is home to lonely buildings and a population you can count on one hand – but in its heyday the location was an important part of the development of Australia’s interior.
Established in 1917, Cook was originally built as a support town for the railway, with more than 50 people helping to maintain the tracks. Alight and wander the remote, time-worn town for a slightly eerie, unique glimpse of pioneering Australia.
